What Is Solid Wood Flooring?

Solid wood flooring is manufactured from a single piece of timber through the full thickness of each board. Unlike engineered boards, it contains no layered construction beneath the surface.

Because the material is solid throughout, it can be sanded and refinished multiple times over its lifespan. This makes it a traditional choice in properties where long-term durability and natural timber character are priorities.

Solid boards are most commonly installed over timber subfloors and are typically fixed using secret nailing or adhesive methods depending on specification.

Solid Wood Flooring Options

  • Various plank widths and lengths

    • Unfinished boards for on-site finishing

    • Factory-finished boards in selected finishes

    • Clean grade through to rustic character grade

    • Traditional tongue and groove profiles

Solid wood flooring is most commonly used in domestic properties and selected commercial environments where subfloor conditions are suitable.

For projects requiring improved dimensional stability or installation over underfloor heating, you may wish to explore our engineered wood flooring range.

Solid Wood Flooring Species

Solid wood flooring is available in a range of timber species, each offering its own colour, grain pattern and overall character.

Common species include:

  • Oak – durable, versatile and widely used

  • Maple – lighter in tone with a fine, consistent grain

  • Walnut – darker appearance with natural variation

  • Beech – pale, warm tones with a smooth grain

  • Merbau – rich reddish-brown colour with strong natural character

Availability, board sizes and finishes vary by species

Unfinished & Prefinished Solid Wood Flooring

Solid wood flooring can be supplied unfinished for on-site finishing or prefinished with oils or lacquers. Unfinished boards allow full control over the final colour and finish, while prefinished options offer a faster installation process and consistent factory-applied results.

Advice can be provided on suitable finishes depending on room use, expected wear and maintenance preferences.
